Clothes can tell us a lot about people. Throughout history, teenagers have used fashion to show which social groups or subcultures they belong to. Two of the most famous British subcultures with very distinct styles are Hippies and Punks.
The Hippies appeared in the 1960s. They believed in peace, love, and harmony with nature. This philosophy strongly influenced their clothes. Hippies enjoyed wearing ethnic jewellery like handmade rings and bracelets. They preferred natural materials, often wearing loose cheesecloth blouses and long, wide trousers called flares. To feel closer to nature, many hippies wore simple sandals or even preferred to walk barefoot. They also wore colourful headbands to keep their long hair in place.
In the late 1970s, the Punks emerged as a complete opposite to hippies. Punks wanted to shock society and show their rebellion. They had brightly coloured hair (often pink, green, or bright red) and liked having tattoos and piercing. A typical punk outfit included untidy and ripped clothes, heavy black Doc Martens boots, and tight black trousers. The most iconic piece of punk clothing was the black leather jacket, which they usually customised (decorated themselves) with metal studs and safety pins.
Today, extreme subcultures are less common. Clothes are still very important to teenagers, but most prefer wearing standard casual clothes when they are relaxing at home or out meeting with friends. Special clothes are usually chosen depending on the season: heavy coats for cold winter days, and raincoats for the typical rainy British weather.
However, there is a big difference in what teenagers wear during the day. In the USA, students can usually wear their casual clothes to public schools. But in Britain, most children have to wear a strict school uniform.
Another interesting fact is that British and American teenagers speak differently about the same clothes. If an American teenager puts on a sweater, pants, and sneakers, a British teenager will call these items a jumper (or pullover), trousers, and trainers. And if it's very cold, an American might wear a turtleneck sweater, while a British teen will call it a polo-neck sweater.
